Job Summary/Basic Function:

Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your community and for your campus during the COVID-19 pandemic? Are you interested in clinical testing? If so, Boise State University has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as a Clinical Laboratory Technician in Boise, Idaho. In this position, you will work in a fast paced and challenging environment as part of a team that will provide the analytical testing needed to increase safety and improve the health of our community as we combat COVID-19. Opportunities exist for current graduate students and those with a Bachelor of Science degree in the fields described under Minimum Requirements below.

Job Overview:

The job responsibilities focus primarily on COVID-19 PCR testing in a Clinical Laboratory located at Boise State University. There you will perform both automated and manual testing in a safe working environment with the overall goal of providing results that are used for the diagnosis and management of COVID-19. Test results will be used to better understand the virus in hopes of limiting its spread.

Essential Functions:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work individually and as part of a team.
  • Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures
  • Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
  • Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving.
  • Prepare, test, and evaluate reagents and/or controls
  • Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
  • Identify and replenish testing supplies as necessary
  • Assist with processing of specimens when needed
  • Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Some positions require experience in: the germination section of a seed laboratory; a Brucellosis laboratory.
  • Ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules
  • Ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must have a Bachelor’s of Science (B.S.) in biology or a biomedical-related field such as biophysics, chemistry, biomedical engineering, material science, engineering, or appropriate health sciences. A degree in ecology would not meet the position requirements at this time.
  • Good laboratory skills and understanding of PCR required
  • Proficiency with computers; familiarity with laboratory information systems preferred
  • High level of attention to detail; strong communication and organizational skills
  • Flexibility to work overtime and additional shifts, depending on business needs

Work Schedule: 

These work assignments will be performed in 8-hour shifts and you can sign up for one or several per week depending on your schedule. If you are a current graduate student your employment eligibility is determined by the current student employment eligibility policy:


This is non-benefit eligible position that will be compensated at a rate commensurate with your experience and education. The minimum rate for these positions is $15.00 per hour, with higher pay possible for those with more education, experience, skills and knowledge.

SARS-CoV-2 requires a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) laboratory, similar to blood-borne pathogens tested in clinical laboratories. Safety policies and procedures are in place to protect employees. All COVID-19 specimens are tested under a biosafety hood that protects employees from exposure to potential aerosols, vapors, and particles generated from the specimens, as well as any possible splashes to the body. All employees are provided with the proper PPE including face shields and masks, lab coats, and gloves.
