|Job Summary/Basic Function:
Assistant Teachers are responsible for supporting the emotional and educational needs of all young children. They must assist Lead Teachers with intentionally preparing and maintaining an enriched learning environment for individual children based on developmentally appropriate programs according to NAEYC Accreditation Standards. The Assistant Teacher helps the Lead Teacher assess the needs of each child in their classroom, and then uses this assessment data to differentiate and individualize instruction to support each child’s developing skills and knowledge. Assistant Teachers are held accountable for nurturing all children, responding to their interests and needs, and making learning meaningful based on their curiosity and concrete methods. Assistant Teachers assist the Lead Teacher in implementing the curriculum, developing ongoing positive partnerships with parents and providing responsive, respectful care for individual needs of children; supervising and evaluating all classroom staff, volunteers, & practicum students in the Lead Teachers absence; maintaining a safe and sanitary environment; performing related work in collaboration with other team teachers.
Assistant Teachers are expected to maintain a very high level of quality and excellence in early care and education by being able to understand, articulate, and meet the standards, criteria and guidelines outlined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Accreditation Standards and Criteria
The Children’s Center provides a warm and nurturing environment for children that will promote each child’s physical, social, emotional, creative, and intellectual development. Our philosophy is based on the belief that each child is unique. Because we understand that children are naturally curious, we know they learn best when allowed to explore and work together with adults and peers. As they are involved in meaningful play, they are able to build on what they already know.
Classroom activities reflect these needs and foster independence, creativity, a sense of empathy and cooperation. We also know children need knowledgeable, nurturing, consistent teacher/caregivers who understand the stages of child development, respect family needs and promote cultural diversity. The staff is dedicated to building strong partnerships with families to enrich Children’s experiences.
The Assistant Teacher will:
- Interact frequently and respectfully with all children.
- Encourage independence and modeling the use of language.

- Facilitate positive peer interactions
- Create a predictable, consistent, and harmonious classroom.
- Honor and nurture young children’s curiosities and place their interests at the center of our curriculum. We encourage children’s inquiry into their world and support them as initiators, researchers, inventors, and explorers.
- Implement lesson plans based on children’s interests and knowledge of each child’s assessment and screening data; including acquiring a general understanding of the Idaho's Early Learning EGuidelines and NAEYC guidelines for accreditation.
- Intentionally observe and provide respectful attention to children’s words, actions and creations.
- Prioritize the whole child by equally valuing all domains of children’s development, including cognitive, communication, motor, physical, sensory and social-emotional development. Respect all children’s right to grow and develop at their own pace.
- Implement a developmentally appropriate, high-quality program for all the children in the group, making reasonable accommodations for children with special needs.
Essential duties of the Assistant Teacher:
1. Relationships 50% - An Assistant Teacher’s responsibility is to use the environment, relationships, and experiences to facilitate the positive development of all children. The Assistant Teacher must assist in:
- Interacting frequently and respectfully with all children
- Encouraging independence and modeling the use of language
- Respecting and building positive relationships with children and families
- Creating a positive emotional climate for children and staff members
- Facilitating positive peer interactions
- Creating a predictable, consistent, and harmonious classroom
2. Curriculum, Assessment & Teaching 20% - Reference the Idaho Early Learning EGuidelines and Ages & Stages as an ongoing assessment tool for developmental growth for each child. NAEYC Accreditation Portfolio will be maintained during the year as a team. The Assistant Teacher must assist in:
- Responding to each child’s interests and needs
- Implementing lesson plans based on children’s interests and knowledge of each child’s assessment and screening data
- Observing each child’s progress and assist in written observations of each child using a variety of informal tools like anecdotal notes, running records, checklists, time sampling, event sampling, rating scales, audiotapes, videotapes, and picture documentation
- Implementing a developmentally appropriate, high-quality program for all the children in the group, making reasonable accommodations for children with special needs
- The implementation of Individual Family Service Plans (IFSP’s) or Individual Education Plans (IEP.s) for children with special needs
- Using care-giving routines such as those related to diapering, toileting, feeding, eating, sleeping, hand washing, tooth brushing and transitioning between activities, as “teaching opportunities” and to foster positive child/teacher bonding
- Supervising children to ensure their safety at all times
3. Physical Environment & Health 10% - The Assistant Teacher must assist in:
- Maintaining the classroom inventory of educational resource materials and equipment, alerting a colleagues to replacement needs
- Safely using indoor physical activity areas and outdoor play areas by checking before children play in those areas for unsafe issues
- Daily maintenance and cleanliness of the classroom including following all required sanitation guidelines based off of the NAEYC guidelines posted in the classrooms for washing toys, equipment, cots/cribs, bedding, etc. as required.
- Following established guidelines in the handbooks to determine when a child is sick and needs to be sent home
- Reporting suspected incidents of abuse to a supervisor, center administrator, and other appropriate agencies as a mandated reporter
- Implementing all required emergency plans based off of the BSU University policy and procedures
- Following all field trip, safety, and transportation regulations during field trips
4. Families & Partnerships 10% - The Assistant Teacher must assist in:
- Communicating with families on a daily basis to ensure they are kept well informed about the program and about their child’s needs and progress.
- Providing an open environment in which families feel comfortable sharing information about their child, their family and their culture.
- Respecting and maintaining confidentiality at all times
- Supporting children and families transition from one classroom to the next and to/from our program to other programs or schools.
- Linking families to services and community partners to support them in getting any additional assistance for their child or family as needed.
- Using the resources of the community and the families in the class as an integral part of the curriculum and children’s learning experiences.
5. Professional Development 10% - The Assistant Teacher is required to be an active member of the Idaho Stars system and other professional organizations, including NAEYC. The Assistant Teacher must also:
- Actively participate in approved professional development and specialized training, staff meetings, and reading professional literature and research to stay current in our profession.
- Demonstrate high personal integrity and a commitment to NAEYC’s Code of Ethical Conduct
- Complete ongoing professional educational requirements
6. Additional Duties and Responsibilities of the Assistant Teacher
- Assume the position of the Lead Teacher in their absence and the duties described in the JDQ
- Direct the activities of Support Staff and substitute teachers and all others assigned to work with the group in the absence of the Lead Teacher.
- Contributing and participating as a TEAM player by exemplifying our core values of collaboration, respect, excellence, and learning in all aspects of his/her work, including contributing to the ongoing team building activities and positive climate of the center
- Ensuring all Idaho licensing regulations, Teaching Strategies benchmarks and NAEYC Accreditation criteria and Idaho Early Learning EGuidelines standards are in compliance and fully met at all times.
- Other duties as required by administration to promote overall program growth

- Ability to read and interpret written information from a variety of sources in order to complete assignments/duties, and interact with children, parents, and staff.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence in order to track and direct ongoing activities and work in progress.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of children, parents, support staff, and other teachers.
