Job Summary/Basic Function:

This is a shared position between the School of Public Service (SPS) and Career Services. The SPS Career Success Coach (CSC) will actively participate in the SPS with the goal of providing access to career exploration, preparation, and experiences through individual coaching and integrated career education. This includes coaching students by exploring career options and paths beyond and outside the school and university. The Career Success Coach will help students prepare and compete for experiential learning opportunities (internships), professional employment, and graduate and professional school opportunities through one-on-one appointments, developing and facilitating career programming, internship administration, and in and out-of-classroom career education opportunities. The CSC will be an active part of the Career Services team, attending Career Services staff and Career Development meetings. Cross-training will occur at the beginning of the assignment.

The School of Public Service Career Success Coach will work with the Career Services' Employer Relations team to develop, improve, and maintain relationships with employers in public service, ultimately leading to the expansion of the quality and quantity of full-time, part-time, and experiential learning (internships) opportunities available for Boise State University students.

The CSC will also work closely with the Integrated Career Specialist to implement and assess initiatives that align with the Blueprint for Success.

Level Scope:

Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees.

Essential Functions:

Direct Student Services: Career Coaching and Workshop Delivery: 65%

  • Coach and advise students on career planning, job-seeking skills, and industry trends to prepare them for experiential opportunities and career employment.
  • Conduct individual or group career coaching and job search advising sessions with students.
  • Present effective career-related workshops and possibly classes to students in the college.
  • Provide individual one-on-one appointments for students applying for internships.
  • Identify and track internship opportunities for students.
  • Help students prepare for the professional and graduate school application process.
  • Provide in-class support for career-related curriculum through workshops, presentations, and activities.
  • Be sensitive and proactive to the concerns and needs of all student populations.
  • Preserve confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Ensure accurate data entry and reporting of all activity into the career development database, including appointment notes.

College Relationships: Program Planning, Implementation, and Assessment: 25%

  • Collaborate with the SPS advising and program teams to stay informed and participate in career-related programming.
  • Attend applicable college meetings to identify opportunities to integrate career education early and regularly throughout the student’s college experience.
  • Work alongside school and program leadership, and faculty (liaison role) to customize an integrated career education strategy that will be fair for all students.
  • Partner with college administration to establish processes and procedures for collaboration with academic departments, academic advisors, and/or targeted student populations.
  • Develop, implement, and assess strategies and tactics related to career development programs and events appropriate to the college.
  • Collect, assess, and evaluate student and faculty responses to integrated career education (Midpoint) assignments.
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies, integrating common career messaging to maximize outreach and impact.
  • Work with the Career Services Integrated Career Education Specialist to identify opportunities for collaboration within the school.

Assigned Employer and Alumni Outreach: Development, Improvement, and Maintenance: 10%

  • Collaborate with the Employer Relations team to develop targeted events and programs for students in the college to connect and network with employers and alumni.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of student development and career development theories and practices
  • Ability to effectively utilize career advising and job search techniques
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use career assessment instruments
  • Knowledge of employer recruiting strategies, job market trends, and job search skills and techniques
  • Knowledge of the public service sector
  • Ability to effectively utilize a variety of instructional techniques
  • Strong communication (oral and written), presentation, marketing, and organizational skills
  • Strong teambuilding and relationship-building skills; ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Knowledge and ability to utilize computer applications and proficiency with the Internet
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus 2 years experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of Career Coaching and/or public sector experience.
  • Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to multitask.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
Salary and Benefits:
