Job Summary/Basic Function:

This junior level position provides occupational safety and health consultation services to private employers throughout Idaho. Through inspection of workplaces, identification of hazards, development of safety and health programs and issuance of reports to clients on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, the consultant assists those clients in protection of their employees and avoidance of enforcement actions by the federal compliance agency.

This role requires a valid Idaho driver's license and access to a personal vehicle for local work-related travel. 

Level Scope:

Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.

Essential Functions:

60% of the time the Consultant, Environmental Safety, Associate will:

• Provide on-site safety and health consultation services to small businesses within the state of Idaho.
• Inspect private workplaces with respect to compliance with OSHA standards and other recognized safety standards.
• Recognize existing safety and health hazards in a wide variety of industrial, construction, and other occupational settings, and predict the likelihood of their effects (consultant will need to be able to recognize hazards in familiar and unfamiliar situations).
• Review employers’ specific written safety and health programs, plans, and records for consistency with OSHA requirements and for practical application.
• Assist employers with the development of applicable safety and health programs in areas such as fall protection, lockout/ tagout, hazard communication, bloodborne disease prevention, and more.
• Develop comprehensive reports to employers that discuss the results of consultation visits by using the OSHA Information System (OIS).

35% of the time the Consultant, Environmental Safety, Associate will:

• Access, retrieve, and interpret technical data from various OSHA/NIOSH/ANSI, NFPA and private sources for application to consultation projects.
• Monitor chemical and biological contaminants in the workplace through the use of direct-reading instruments, or by air sampling, with subsequent laboratory analysis to evaluate hazards and make recommendations for preventing or controlling them (will require the ability to lift 40-50 lb. suitcases).
• Conduct onsite safety and health training of managers and employees with regard to OSHA regulations, hazard recognition, and hazard abatement.
• Conduct limited offsite training of employers and employees on selected technical and regulatory topics (classroom-type teaching), and prepare training materials for these classes.

5% of the time the Consultant, Environmental Safety, Associate will:

• Conduct limited offsite training of employers and employees on selected technical and regulatory topics (classroom-type teaching), and prepare training materials for these classes.
• Perform other duties as assigned. 

Work Environment and Travel:

• Extended periods of moving about construction sites and within industrial settings.
• Prolonged periods of remaining in a stationary position, often more than two hours at a time.
• Ascending and descending ladders and stairways of various lengths.
• Traversing narrow walkways and aisles and other confining spaces between machinery and stairways, some of which may be unfinished or under construction.
• Traversing narrow catwalks and moving on uneven surfaces with varied ground conditions such as those found on construction sites (wet, dry, muddy, icy, etc.).
• Ability to lift 40-50 pounds of industrial hygiene equipment.
• Frequent and long-distance operation of personal and/or state-owned motor vehicles on public roadways.
• Travel done by this position includes both local and overnight travel.
• Travel is required a minimum of 35% of the time to and from job-sites around the state of Idaho to perform essential duties of the position.
• Travel includes operating motor vehicles for considerable distances, and requires spending 5 days per week, 1 week a month traveling to different regions of Idaho.
• Travel is also required out-of-state to attend training. Training may last up to two weeks and include a weekend away from home.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

• Understanding of industrial hygiene.
• Knowledge and/or ability to learn sound level meter, noise dosimeter, personal air monitoring pump use.
• Ability to identify safety and health hazards in the workplace.
• Working knowledge of OSHA 1910 and 1926 standards.
• Time management skills.
• Ability to work independently.
• Strong to excellent computer skills. Familiar with MS office products, including Word and Excel.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or relevant professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
• One year of similar professional experience including:
• Comprehensive working knowledge of OSHA safety regulations (29 CFR1900’s, 29CFR1910, and 29 CFR1926).
• Experience applying OSHA regulations in industrial/commercial settings, including the identification of hazards and solutions to hazardous conditions.
• Comprehensive working knowledge of OSHA’s Safety and Health Achievement Recognition program (SHARP).
• Ability to develop and implement OSHA’s 1989 Safety and Health Program Management Guidelines in a variety of business settings.
• Must hold current Idaho driver’s license and have personal vehicle available for work use.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range starts at $47,320 annually and is commensurate with experience. Boise State University provides a best-in-class benefits package, including (but not limited to):
