Job Summary/Basic Function:

The purpose of this position is to ensure the operational readiness and support of academic laboratories, prepare reagents, assist faculty with lab curriculum development, order chemicals, maintain chemical inventory, deliver safety training, ensure proper chemical storage, maintain and operate scientific equipment and instrumentation, manage student employees, and data management of all academic lab needs.

Level Scope:

Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees. Typically hold a Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Essential Functions:

This position is responsible for academic laboratory logistics, data management, safety, and support in order to ensure operational readiness for all academic nursing skills laboratories:

  • Weekly supply and inventory preparation for all nursing laboratory courses.
  • Act as onsite support of all academic skills laboratory troubleshooting.
  • Ensure academic laboratory readiness at the beginning of each semester in regards to cleanliness, preparation of supplies and chemicals, and verify all equipment are operational.
  • Coordinate laboratory supplies and equipment for nursing laboratory classes.
  • Coordinate with all laboratory instructors/coordinators for schedules and procedures for each academic laboratory course each semester.
  • Work with laboratory coordinators implementing changes and improvements to educational laboratory curriculum.
  • Maintain detailed procedures for each simulation or skills laboratory preparation.
  • Manage nursing inventory levels and order all supplies for academic laboratories.
  • Act as department safety officer for all academic laboratories and report laboratory incidents.
  • Identify and dispose of hazardous chemicals and waste in accordance with University, Federal, and State requirements.
  • Coordinate with University Environmental Health and Safety for hazardous waste disposal as needed.
  • Fill in for Laboratory Operations Specialist when absent.
  • Set up and tear down of skills laboratory curriculum and lab assignments.
  • Opens and closes lab.
  • Performs routine maintenance and custodial lab duties.
  • Insures software is up and running, conducts simple upgrades.
  • Trains instructors and students on lab equipment, procedures, and software.
  • Assists students in use of software.

Additional Essential Functions: 

  • Additional committee work and special projects as assigned by the Simulation Operations Coordinator and Lab Operations Specialist including the cross training to simulation support. 
  • The position does not have any regular responsibility for overseeing or supervising the work of other employees.
  • This position will primarily work inside the nursing skills laboratory. This position must be on their feet 90% of the time and at a computer regularly.

  • This position does not have any travel requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Think critically – ability to use medical or nursing knowledge to solve complex problems.
  • Knowledge of medical and nursing equipment, troubleshooting techniques, sample preparations and skills lab scenario set-up and storage, chemical inventory management, and inventory reporting requirements.
  • Ability to build trust and maximize relationships – must seamlessly interact with several internal (faculty, staff, and adjust professors) and multiple external groups.
  • Manage performance- must be able to delegate and assess work performance of subordinates.
  • Communicate effectively – must be able to discuss complex nursing and scientific topics with several audiences (subordinates researchers, students, University organizations, and vendors). 
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years experience or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Health Science background/experience.
  • General knowledge of medical equipment and supplies.
  • Must be able to work standing and walking for long periods of time, with the ability to lift 40 lbs multiple times during the workday. Must be able to bend, lift, move and maneuver mannikins and task trainers multiple times throughout the workday.

Salary starting at $46,051.20 annually, and is commensurate with experience.
