Job Summary/Basic Function:

Under the supervision of the Director of Sports Turf Operations, this position is responsible for planning, design, and upkeep of the university sports grass fields, synthetic turf, landscape, and hardscape. The position is also responsible for the supervision of the day-to-day operational activities of grounds maintenance staff, including sports turf management, litter control and abatement and light snow removal

Level Scope:

Provides immediate supervision to a unit or group of operational or technical employees. A portion of time may be spent performing individual tasks related to the unit; however, supervisory activities must constitute a primary part of the job. Supervises unit operations to ensure compliance with departmental or campus policies, procedures, and defined internal controls. Ensures accountability and stewardship of campus resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental standards and procedures.

Essential Functions:
  • Oversight of day-to-day landscaping maintenance at assigned field(s).  Plan and design landscaping and grounds maintenance activities; ensure work is accomplished; troubleshoot problem areas of grounds maintenance; requisition and inventory tools, supplies, and equipment; organize budget data; and insure safety practices are followed.
  • Supervise daily operations of crew of full-time and student workers,  including interviewing, hiring staff and evaluating performance
  • Maintain premium sports field surfaces by implementing best practices in mowing, fertilization, pest management, aeration, moisture management, top dressing, and more.
  • Help oversee and maintain of all sports turf fields under the Director of Sports Turf Operations.
  • Help oversee, maintain, manage and plan all landscape features on Athletic Department grounds including trees, shrubbery, flower beds, and artificial and natural grass surfaces.
  • Develop policies and standards for landscape maintenance on campus within campus policies and procedures.
  • Hire, train, appraise, and motivate an appropriate workforce to meet varying seasonal needs.
  • Optimize the utilization of permanent staff, temporary staff, and outside contractors to meet department goals.
  • Inspect assigned work to ensure that standards for work quality, established
  • operating procedures, productivity, and safety practices are being satisfactorily maintained.
  • Stay abreast of any governmental rules and regulations that apply to landscaping activities and ensure that strict compliance is maintained. Purchase and maintain equipment, tools, and supplies to ensure that landscaping staff has the resources available to maximize their productivity.
  • Assist with game day and event operation setup and tear down for both internal and external groups.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Ability to establish and enforce procedures and work standards that will ensure adequate performance and personnel safety
  • Ability to communicate and convey information effectively
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Considerable knowledge of: landscaping and grounds maintenance and related safety practices
  • Good knowledge of: plant and soil types; horticulture and professional landscaping practices
  • Some knowledge of: supervisory practices; sprinkler system layout and design
  • Experience: operating and maintaining equipment and hand and power tools; mixing and using landscape chemicals; installing and maintaining sprinkler systems; OR any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by the Division of Human Resources.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with collegiate or professional sports turfs.
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Turf Management, Agronomy, or Horticulture.
