Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Senior Coordinator supports the planning and execution of New Student Programs (NSP) events and services, which include New Student Orientation, Bronco Family Orientation, Bronco Welcome events, International Student Orientation, and First Year student success programming.  First Year Support initiatives are nimbly designed to address equity gaps identified by the Strategic Enrollment and Retention Plan (SERP). This position directly supervises 1 FTE who supports all of the above as a Program Coordinator.

This position is responsible for the training and supervision of a team of approximately 30 student staff who function as ambassadors of University culture and role models to current students; they must be able to create hiring and training practices that yield a team of students who can thrive under pressure and demonstrate respect for the responsibility given them. They must be confident in implementing disciplinary measures with students, as needed. An interest in student development and a commitment to student advocacy are vital for success in this position.

Strong relationships with key staff in Student Affairs and Enrollment Management will be critical to the success of NSP in meeting its goals. Key partners include the Advising and Academic Support Center, Housing and Residence Life, Student Equity, the Educational Access Center, the Center for Global Engagement and the Student Involvement and Leadership Center. The success and impact of new student orientation, transition support and first year experience work is dependent upon maintaining reciprocal relationships with the aforementioned offices. Orientation, transition and first year experience work must accurately reflect the institution’s ability to serve students in order to positively impact student success and retention so staying abreast of university capacity and personnel is imperative.

As a front line university representative to new students and their families, the Senior Coordinator must be able to make quick and thoughtful decisions about all aspects of the programs and services offered by NSP. Customer Service skills are important. Failure to make prompt, informed, service-oriented and ethical decisions could result in a negative experience for new students, families and staff across campus. This employee must be nimble and able to understand the ways that our work represents and impacts various areas of campus.

Department Overview:

Boise State New Student Programs helps acclimate students and their families to the college experience. The general functional areas of our department include creating and implementing orientation, transition and ongoing engagement programs for new students and their families. Our work ensures our new first year, transfer, non-traditional, and international students have a smooth and positive transition to the Boise State University community.

Level Scope:

Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees.

Essential Functions:

90% of Time the Senior Coordinator must:

  • Coordinate Orientation
    • Contribute to the visioning and execution of annual orientation programming for first year, transfer/non-traditional, international and virtual students
    • Coordinate International Student Orientation (twice per year) in collaboration with the Center for Global Engagement and Virtual Orientation (AKA Long Distance Orientation)
    • Support all Housing and Conference Services Coordination including planning and support for overnight supervision during summer programs
    • Coordinate with Campus Services to manage space and logistics and with Academic Affairs to assign spaces for advising and registration
    • Report on programmatic assessment
    • Identify necessary deliverables to support programs and processes; coordinate to completion
  • Student Hiring, Training, and Supervision
    • Execute the hiring of a team of approximately 30 student staff (Orientation Coordinators and Orientation Leaders)
    • In close collaboration with the Director of NSP and in partnership with numerous campus colleagues, coordinate the seasonal training of all student staff each spring.
    • Directly supervise the 3-4 senior student leaders who supervise our 25-30 Orientation Leaders spring through summer
    • Implement and lead student development opportunities that focus on student employability
  • First Year Student Support Initiatives
    • Plan all curricular needs
    • In partnership with cross divisional student service resources and departments, provide programmatic support to students at-risk of leaving or not returning to the University (See populations identified by ongoing Strategic Enrollment and Retention Planning)
    • Collaborate with senior members of the Admissions and New Student Programs team to support outreach and early connections to campus for vulnerable student populations

10% of Time the Senior Coordinator must provide:

  • Department Leadership and Support 
    • Provide departmental and divisional support by participating in various hiring committees and Student Affairs events and initiatives. Attend professional conferences, workshops, and/or seminars to continue professional growth and development.
    • Serve on cross-campus committees as appropriate, with attention to First Year Experience developments.
    • Assist other staff members with special events and programs as requested by the supervisor.

  • The ability to facilitate medium and large groups, with attention to learning and creating a welcoming environment
  • Ability to think analytically and critically
  • Experience delegating work
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree (preferably in Student Development, Student Leadership, Counseling, Higher Education/Student Affairs Administration or related field)
  • 2-5 years experience honing related skill sets.
  • Direct personnel management experience of student employee teams: recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and disciplining
Salary and Benefits:
