Job Summary/Basic Function:

Independently performs components of a research project or program as directed by a senior member of the research team. A Research Associate may be involved in designing certain aspects of research projects and independently conduct work complementary to the overall research objectives.

Department Overview:

The Tinker Research Laboratory is focused on bacterial pathogenesis and vaccine development. Specifically, we are an intradisciplinary group of undergraduate students, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows that work to develop veterinary and human vaccines based on bacterial enterotoxin adjuvants. We have collaborations across the University, as well as with other regional research groups and companies, and work to foster an environment of respect, inclusion and innovation. The goals of our research are in line with a One Health approach: that the health of humans is strongly connected to the health of animals and the environment.

The Tinker Research Laboratory is a part of the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences. This department serves a large number of students majoring in biology, or taking biology courses for other degree programs and has a long history of excellence in teaching and research. Level Scope:

Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision. Exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance, assistance, and training to entry-level professionals, support employees, and students

Essential Functions:

60% of Time the Research Associate

  • Conduct experiments to support the main goals of the IGEM-HERC proposal
  • Analyze, interpret, document, and prepare research findings, in collaboration with the PI and graduate students, from this work for review and publication in scientific journals.
  • Train and guide undergraduate students in research protocols.

35% of Time the Research Associate may:

  • Collect, analyze, and report data
  • Coordinate with research partners and vendors
  • Assist dissemination of project results through policy briefs, white papers, reports, conferences, and peer-reviewed publications
  • Maintain instrumentation, as applicable, related to field or laboratory research
  • Provide technical support to researchers
  • May be involved in designing certain aspects of research projects. Independently conducts work complementary to the overall research objectives.
  • Train and mentor others in the use of research-related protocols, models, and instrumentation

5% of Time the Research Associate may:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of scientific principles, research design, and research protocols, including analysis and collection of samples
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to perform field or laboratory work, as applicable to the position
  • Ability to learn new skills with an appropriate amount of training
  • Ability to develop working relationships with research partners and vendors
  • Experience with conducting outreach
Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a minimum of Master's or equivalent degree, or Bachelor's or equivalent degree, plus at least 2 years of post-bachelor's work experience in a role that is similar to that of a Research Assistant.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, or a related field, or a bachelor's degree in one of these fields plus two years of work experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience working with mice or other animal models.

Salary starts at $53,456.00 and is commensurate with experience.
