Job Summary/Basic Function:

Boise State University - High School Equivalency Program (HEP) is a federally funded program administered by the U.S. Department of Education - Office of Migrant Education (OME). HEP assists migratory and seasonal farmworkers and their children who are 16 years of age or older obtain a General Educational Development (GED) certificate or the state equivalent to a high school diploma and subsequently to gain employment in a career position or the military or entry into postsecondary education. The GED Teacher/Advisor is responsible for providing GED instruction and supportive activities for HEP participants which will enable them to pass their GED tests and develop post-GED plans.

This is a 10-month appointment working 32 hours a week.

Department Overview:

The High School Equivalency Program (HEP) is a federally funded grant housed in the Center for Multicultural and Educational Opportunities (CMEO) in the College of Education.

HEP provides GED preparation, supportive, and post-GED placement services to eligible participants from farm working families.

Level Scope:

Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.

Essential Functions:

● Provide GED subject instruction in English and Spanish to HEP students in order to ensure successful completion of GED requirements (language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies). Provide individual or group instruction via face-to-face and virtual classes.
● Maintain a classroom environment conducive to student learning and provide regular updates on student attendance and educational progress.
● Administer and evaluate student performance on assessments to identify and address areas of weakness. Analyze official practice tests results and classroom performance to determine readiness for official tests. Evaluate effectiveness of instructional methods in meeting stated program objectives.
● Track student attendance to support student retention and program completion.
● Assist in scheduling official tests for students.

● Collaborate with HEP staff and other instructors in developing curriculum, instruction, and personal and career development activities for on and off-campus students.
● Assign and monitor tutorial assistance for HEP students.
● Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings and other activities as requested by the administration (e.g. cultural or enrichment activities, training workshops/conferences).

● May perform other duties as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

● Ability to develop and deliver instruction to support student attainment of the Idaho High School Equivalency Credential via passing the GED exams.
● Ability to deliver instruction in English and Spanish.
● Ability to plan and deliver curriculum in face-to-face and virtual environments.
● Proficiency in using technology to deliver instruction and communicate with students (e.g video conferencing such as Zoom, Google, email, and Office Applications.).
● Strong interpersonal skills to maintain a respectful, professional relationship with students from farm worker backgrounds.
● Strong interpersonal skills to maintain a respectful and collaborative work climate with project staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

● Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant professional experience.
● Bilingual - Spanish/English (read, write, speak).
● Possess a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

● Bachelor's degree in Education or related field.
● Two years classroom experience.
● Previous experience in Adult Education.

Salary and Benefits:
