Job Summary/Basic Function:

Serves as the primary media relations contact for the Boise State men’s basketball and men’s golf programs by growing the reach and storytelling of the teams’ student-athletes, coaches and staff to local, regional and national media as well as on Boise State’s owned channels. The position will also help lead and mentor the media relations graduate assistants and provide direction of features written by the athletic media relations team.

Level Scope:

Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of area typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures. Typically hold a Bachelor’s or Advanced Degree and 5 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Essential Functions:

60% of Time the Director, Athletic Media Relations must:

  • Serve as the primary contact for the men’s basketball and men’s golf teams.
  • Write and publish weekly press releases, media guides, and game programs.
  • Manage social media accounts related to assigned sports and help drive the digital content strategy on those channels through proactive and impactful storytelling.
  • Organize and coordinate game management staffing for assigned sports and assist with other athletic media relations staff’s sports when needed.
  • Publish and update game results, game stories, statistics, and general information on the web in relation to assigned sports as well as make sure the website is up to date with information about Boise State teams, coaches, student-athletes, and other activities in the athletic department.
  • Coordinate interviews, correspondence, and media relations with media outlets, opponents, and conference office, in relation to assigned sports.
  • Facilitate the gathering, reporting, and archiving of statistics and photos for assigned sports.
  • Assist in oversight of office staff, including mentorship to Assistant Director(s), and oversight of graduate assistants and/or undergraduate students.
  • Represent the university at necessary community functions.

35% of Time the Director, Athletic Media Relations

  • Travel to away games with the men’s basketball team
  • Work home football games as needed
  • Social media management for assigned sports

5% of Time the Communications Specialist, Senior

  • Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Ability to multitask, work effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Problem-solving skills involving groups and/or events
  • Strong knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations regarding compliance issues
  • Strong knowledge and experience of journalism or media/public relations
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor Degree with at least 5 years experiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three (3) years experience in a collegiate athletic media relations office.
  • Three (3) years experience working in a Division I athletics department.
  • Two (2) years experience working with a Division I Men's Basketball program.
Salary and Benefits:
