Job Summary/Basic Function:

Under the supervision of an Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life, the Coordinator of Residential Engagement (CRE) is responsible for the oversight and advisement of the Residential Housing Association (RHA) and National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) student leadership organizations; as well as providing support to Resident Directors (RDs) in their efforts to advise hall councils in their communities.The CRE also coordinates the success of our Community Development Model, is responsible for representing Housing during summer orientations, and serves as a member of the Resident Director On-Call (RDOC) crisis response rotation.

Housing & Residence Life (HRL) is a department that houses approximately 3000 students and staff in 10 campus living communities, including traditional, suite and apartment communities. Level Scope:

Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self-development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.

Essential Functions:

60% of the time this position will:

● Leadership Development & Program Development:

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life to sustain and adapt a community development experience for residential students.
  • Assist the Residential Housing Association (RHA) and National Residence Hall Honorary’s (NRHH) programming efforts to be in conjunction and alignment with the Department of Housing and Residence Life’s vision, mission, and values.
  • Maintain excellent and current records of program goals, learning outcomes, assessments, and attendance to share with internal and external constituents and serve as a liaison for the department for university events.
  • Develop and coordinate ongoing student staff appreciation initiatives to maintain team morale.
  • Support the Assistant Directors for Residence Life in the development of returning student staff to elevate their leadership experience.
  • Support professional staff in advising Hall Councils, including encouraging students to become involved within the residential community, RHA, NRHH, student clubs and organizations, Boise State departments, and/or community agencies

● Administrative Functions:

  • Ensure the infusion of the Curricular Approach to the student experience.
  • Employs a student-focused approach to design training and development initiatives.
  • Collaborate with campus partners as necessary.
  • Maintain records and documentation for events, training, assessment efforts, annual processes, etc.
  • Cultivate effective and mutually supportive working relationships with members of the campus community.
  • Resolve conflicts and encourage communication among staff, student leaders, and residents.
  • Oversee budget allocation and ensure compliance with HRL, University, and State policies.
  • Respond to daily requests for information and assistance from Housing and Residence Life staff, residents, and campus partners.

35% of the time the position must:

● Advising RHA and NRHH:

  • Advise the RHA and NRHH executive boards. This inlcudesselecting, training, recognizing, supporting, and assessing/evaluating executive board and General Assembly members, as applicable.
  • Serve as a liaison between the RHA students, Housing and Residence Life and other institutional and external entities; involving RHA and NRHH in discussions and decisions within Housing and Residence Life and/or Boise State University, as appropriate.
  • Oversight of agreements, communication, and logistics for third-party vendors in relation to RHA and NRHH commission earnings.
  • Ensure RHA and NRHH website content and marketing materials are current, useful, attractive, accurate, and following appropriate brand standards.
  • Assist the RHA and NRHH executive boards in coordinating regional and national conference travel.
  • Maintain current records of program goals, learning outcomes, assessment, and attendance to share with internal and external constituents as it relates to RHA and NRHH programming.

● HRL Orientation Session Coordination:

  • Support New Student Programs and Orientation Leads with overall mission-critical Orientation needs over the summer. Co-coordinate help with the RHA summer student as needed.

● Department, Division, Campus Committee Participation

  • Participate in assigned Housing and Residence Life committees or team workgroups
    Participate in divisional workgroups based on interest and need when applicable.
  • Actively participate and engage in residence hall, suite, townhouse, and/or apartment opening and closing administrative tasks/activities.
  • Assist in recruiting, selecting, and training Housing and Residence Life staff, including full-time professionals and paraprofessionals.
  • Address behavioral problems and emergencies, as applicable. Confront situations in which University and/or Housing and Residence Life policies and community standards may be violated, as well as assist live-in professional and paraprofessional and staff members with the resolution of difficult confrontation situations.
  • Serve on 24-hour RD on Call (RDOC) duty (day, evening, holiday, and weekend) 365 days a year in rotation with other Residence Life staff supporting students and student staff who are responding to a variety of emergencies. This includes crisis and emergency response, facility maintenance, direction and support for student staff, and conflict resolution for residents living in on-campus housing facilities (approximately 3000 students).

5% of the time the position will have:

  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor. This includes but is not limited to at least 40 hours per year for full-time employees dedicated to helping with broad divisional or institution programs or initiatives that may be outside the department such as Move-In Day, Welcome Week, Parent & Family Weekend, Bronco Day, Commencement, or other special projects.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

● Ability to identify and address students’ needs in developmentally intentional and appropriate ways.
● Experience in planning, implementing, overseeing, and assessing large-scale educational, social, and academic programs.
● Knowledge in advising student leadership organizations in a thorough, professional,
objective, and respectful manner.
● Skills in conflict resolution, mediation, and problem-solving to resolve complex disputes.
● Knowledge of student development theory, group dynamics, and current issues and trends in higher education; an understanding of student development, staff development, leadership development, and multicultural issues; demonstrated skills in working with individuals and
groups with a wide array of identities and life experiences, including gender, disability, race/ethnicity, class, sexuality, culture, religion, etc.
● Establish and maintain effective working relationships with and elicit cooperation from colleagues, members of external groups, and co-workers.
● Able to effectively prioritize and work on multiple tasks with concurrent deadlines and demonstrate excellent time management skills and efficiency.
● Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff, faculty, and students; establishing and maintaining cooperative, working relationships; sensibly managing emergencies and responding diplomatically and effectively to complaints.
● Good organizational, written, and verbal communication skills in preparing and presenting results.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant experience and 1 year of professional experience or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

● Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, Counseling, or a related field.
● At least 2 years of supervisory experience in similar/same type of work.
● Fluency in two or more languages.
