Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Capital Access Team Business Consultant plays a crucial role in helping small business clients, particularly socially and economically disadvantaged entrepreneurs, prepare for successful access to capital. This position focuses on coaching and advising clients on financial preparedness, loan packaging, cash flow management, and overall financial strategy to ensure they are positioned to secure funding from banks, lenders, or other financial institutions. The consultant will not perform financial tasks for clients but will instead empower and educate them on best practices, enabling long-term success and self-sufficiency.

This position:

  • Is hybrid-eligible. Work can be performed from an alternative work location anywhere in the state of Idaho near one of our regional offices.
  • Is funded until November 2028.
  • Can work a maximum of 19.5 hours weekly.

Level Scope:

Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees.

Essential Functions:

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support Statewide SBDC Centers (6) in the region by advising SBDC clients and consultant peers on accessing debt and equity capital.
  • Leverage funding expertise to provide training (in person/online) on accessing debt & equity capital for regional clients, staff & partners.
  • Conduct regional funder (lender/investor) outreach to ID and track sources of capital (traditional & non-traditional).
  • Conduct regional outreach to SBDC Center Directors and SBDC staff to articulate Capital Access Team program offerings & support.
  • Contribute knowledge and connections to Capital Access Team network of regional funders and sources of capital.
  • Maintain portfolio of regional clients by maintaining awareness of client needs, activity and funding status.
  • Regularly attend statewide Capital Access Team meetings as needed to support statewide Capital Access Team program efforts.
  • Contribute to Capital Access Team program reporting in support of statewide programming and stakeholder engagement.
  • Collaborate with other Capital Access Team consultants to support statewide program needs.
  • Document detailed session notes from client meetings into SBDC Network database systems.
  • Document successful client economic impacts (e.g: capital, jobs, sales, biz formation) using SBDC Network form as needed to support the Regional Primary Consultant.
  • Work closely with Regional Office Primary Consultant to keep in communication as to the status of client funding process progress as needed/desired by Primary. Continue the client/consultant relationship until funding is closed/secured and return relationship back to the primary consultant as needed for further business development support.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Assist SBDC Center Clients as Needed:

  • Provide Capital Access Team advising virtually (mostly) Statewide.
  • Review new Capital Access Team client inquires, engage and suggest possible next steps.
  • Review Capital Access Team client business plans, financial projections and funding packages with Primary Consultant.
  • Provide SBDC clients and consultants feedback on documents to enhance preparedness for funding.
  • Assist SBDC clients and consultants to develop project funding strategies.
  • Advise SBDC clients and consultants on best regional sources of capital.
  • Assist SBDC clients and consultants with timely funder relations introductions - as appropriate.

Maintain Capital Access Team Client Pipeline, Document Client Progress and Advising Session Notes:

  • Conduct regular client outreach and connections to support client engagement and progress.
  • Conduct regular ongoing (weekly) updates to Network databases documenting client session notes and status.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to manage client portfolio, strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Familiarity with small business procurement issues.
  • Ability to present and train to groups.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years experience or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience evaluating business plans and MS EXCEL proforma financial projections.
  • Expertise guiding clients to develop funder-ready business plans with thoughtful proforma financials & assumptions.
  • Experience conducting financial statement analysis using industry benchmarks and evaluating cashflow.
  • Knowledge and expertise of commercial banking, deal structuring, loan guaranteed programs and underwriting practices.
  • Knowledge and expertise accessing traditional and non-traditional sources of capital.
  • Experience working with different types of funders both debt and equity.
  • Experience managing a portfolio of multiple client projects at different stages simultaneously.
  • Experienced trainer and accomplished public speaker both in-person and via online training platforms.
  • Proficient user of hybrid/remote work technology (computer, mobile, virtual meetings, cloud-based platforms & tools).
  • Proficiency in Spanish is preferred and will be considered an asset.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field.
  • MBA or advanced degree in a finance-related field is a plus.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary is $33/hour. This position is non-benefit eligible.
