Job Summary/Basic Function:

Boise State University is seeking a Business Intelligence Analyst to join the Business Intelligence and Reporting Services (BIRS) team. This role will support the development, enhancement, and delivery of data-driven solutions that empower decision-making across the university.

The analyst will play a key role in gathering requirements by working with stakeholders to develop business cases and user stories, ensuring that data solutions align with university goals. They will also contribute to Agile development processes, participate in data governance initiatives, and collaborate with developers to optimize data structures for reporting and analytics. 

This role reports to the Business Intelligence and Reporting Services (BIRS) team and will collaborate with the Project Management Office (PMO), Enterprise Information Architect, and various university departments.

Department Overview:

Boise State’s Business Intelligence and Reporting Services (BIRS) team prepares and delivers data from enterprise source systems for analytical purposes in an organized and accessible manner via enterprise business intelligence tools. The end-user products are typically in the form of reports, dashboards, and visualizations.

This hybrid eligible position will have the flexibility to work from Boise State's campus and their home in the Boise area.

Level Scope:

Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self-development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.

Essential Functions:

60% of Time the Business Intelligence Analyst must:

  • Assist in working with single or groups of stakeholders to understand current process and gather new requirements using a variety of techniques such as brainstorming sessions and structured process walk through sessions.
  • Assist in identifying and clarifying requirements using basic conceptual and logical process/data modeling techniques such as business process flow charts, simple data flows or workflow.
  • Assist in documenting business needs assessment, identifying the problem to be solved and provide input to potential solutions.
  • Assist in documenting future state process design, illustrating inputs, outputs and cross swim lame handoffs.
  • Assist in working with the developers and operations teams to gather estimates for development and cost savings.
  • Learn the distinction between functional, non-functional and business requirements and assist in documenting them for technical teams and assist in documenting them accordingly.
  • Assist in identifying potential gaps with future state processes. Assist in designing user acceptance test plans and test cases.
  • Learn to understand the complexity of project to be deployed and assist in recommending where campus training may be necessary.

35% of Time the Business Intelligence Analyst:

  • Gather, analyze, and document business requirements for data and reporting solutions.
  • Translate business needs into clear, actionable user stories with well-defined acceptance criteria.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand workflows, pain points, and reporting needs.
  • Assist in data validation and user acceptance testing to ensure quality solutions.
  • Support the development team by clarifying requirements and resolving ambiguities.
  • Work closely with the PMO and Enterprise Information Architect to ensure alignment with university-wide data strategies.
  • Participate in all Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and sprint reviews.
  • Remove blockers and improve team efficiency by identifying and addressing impediments.
  • Foster Agile best practices and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a bridge between technical teams and business stakeholders to enhance collaboration.
  • Promote best practices for data governance, reporting accuracy, and BI tool usage.
  • Assist in BIRS-hosted report training, helping end-users leverage data tools effectively.
  • Support a culture of continuous improvement in data processes and reporting methodologies.
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of product backlog items (PBIs).

5% of Time the Enterprise Business Analyst:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Ability to assist in the development of business model components.
  • Ability to assist in the facilitation of workshops with stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate with diagrams to clarify and validate requirements.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience utilizing critical thinking skills to proactively problem solve including anticipation of issues, determination of solution or resolution and provide appropriate communication to impacted parties.
  • Experience with MS Suite and other standard office applications.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relational database systems and tools such as SQL and SQL query tool(s) such as Oracle SQL*Plus.
  • Knowledge and understanding of ERP concepts and functions.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 1 year of experience with business intelligence, data reporting, or analytics projects.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a business analysis, project coordination, or Agile-related role.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and communication skills Basic understanding of SQL, data visualization tools (e.g., Oracle Analytics Cloud, Power BI, Tableau), and data governance.
  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and experience facilitating Agile meetings.
  • Familiarity with project management and collaboration tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, or Trello.
Salary and Benefits:
