Job Summary/Basic Function:

To perform journey-level maintenance, repair and overhaul of gasoline and/or diesel powered vehicles, equipment and related hydraulic, electrical, and electronic component systems; fabricate, install and retrofit related ancillary devices; perform related work.

Campus Security Authority: This position is identified as a “Campus Security Authority (CSA)” per the federal law known as the Clery Act. Per this law, the employee is required to report any crimes that he/she becomes aware of to the Clery Compliance Officer. Additionally, CSAs are required to complete annual training prescribed by the Clery program Compliance Officer.

Level Scope:

Regularly works on tasks that are varied and complex. Applies full range and job knowledge; frequently adapts procedures, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment to meet specialized needs; may serve as lead; performs broad and/or focused assignments under general supervision; originality and ingenuity are often required to help establish procedures in functional area; relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned tasks.

Essential Functions:

Public Safety
● Ensures customer service for the entire Department and campus community.
● Engages in Departmental problem-solving for organizational issues; makes recommendations for Department efficiencies and advancement.
● Plans and coordinates a variety of special administrative projects and assignments.
● Renews job knowledge by reading professional journals, participating in education opportunities, and belonging to professional organizations.
● Represents the Department and the Division in select working groups, committees, and partnerships, both internal and external to the University.

Mechanical Duties
● Test drives and/or inspects vehicles and equipment for wear, damage, or specific problems that might affect performance.
● Check lighting and charging systems for proper operation, and repair as necessary
● Perform engine tune-ups, including diagnosing items needing repair or replacement and adjusting or replacing items as necessary.
● Service vehicles and other motorized equipment with fluids, lubricants, and safety items.
● Remove and replace filters and batteries.
● Check and recharge air conditioning systems.
● Adjust and repair brakes, clutches, steering components, shocks, and struts.
● Remove and install alternators, generators, starters, water and fuel pumps, carburetors, steering mechanisms, mufflers and clamps.
● Steam clean and wash vehicles.
● Use tools associated with the mechanic trade such as welders, hoists, wheel balancers, testing equipment, soldering guns, tire machines, and related hand and power tools; clean and maintain shop, tools, and equipment
● Prepare records and reports.
● May assist journey mechanics by: setting up equipment and assembling tools for major engine, transmission, and power-train repairs; assisting in alignment; body, frame, and fender repair; hydraulic repair; and windshield and glass installation
● Maintain motor pool vehicle fleet.
● Inspect and verify that vehicles meet bid specifications.
● Small engine repair.
● Operate vehicles to evaluate work required and/or performed.

Daily Shop Operations
● Complete records of repairs and maintenance costs and records regarding daily shop operations.
● Issue, prepare, and complete work orders.
● Prepare estimates for costs of repairs and estimates for accident repairs, bodywork, painting.
● Inspect tool and equipment condition and determine needed upgrades. Repair, replace, and obtain replacements as needed and approved by supervisor.
● Inventory parts and supplies. Adjust, replenish, and discontinue as required.
● Perform safe and proper handling, disposal, and recordkeeping for all wastes (coolant, freon, waste oil, solvents, fuels, tires, etc.).
● Ensure designated vehicles comply with Ada County Air Quality regulations.

Preventative Maintenance Program
● Assists shop foreman with program for vehicle repairs and replacements to ensure vehicles are in good working order for the campus community.
● Clean and prepare vehicles for the next rental.
● Determine the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, maintain program and policies to meet the above criteria, reduce unscheduled maintenance, and control operational costs.
● Comply with all policies and procedures necessary to maintain good working order of all shop equipment, tools, resources, and vehicles.

May perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

● Experience welding and fabricating specialized vehicular devices.
● Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
● Ability to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
● Has knowledge of the Department, its employees, and how the department functions.
● Ability to exercise discretion when dealing with confidential matters and information.
● Ability to respond appropriately and in a timely manner to emergency situations. The incumbent is expected to be on-call.

Minimum Qualifications:

Good knowledge of: safety precautions and procedures relating to mechanical equipment and repair shops; the use, care, and disposal of hazardous automotive material and waste.

Experience: diagnosing and repairing gasoline and/or diesel automotive and construction type equipment; using mechanics' tools and related specialized equipment to perform maintenance, repair and overhaul of engines and related drivetrain, electrical, and hydraulic systems; preparing records and reports; diagnosing and repairing electronic and computer controlled motor vehicle systems; reading and interpreting technical service manuals.

Must have a valid driver's license.

Salary and Benefits:
