The Department of Art, Design, and Visual Studies at Boise State University is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor of Graphic Design to begin on August 16, 2023.

The successful applicant will teach courses at all levels in the following areas: graphic design, typography, UX design, or other program-specific courses. A set curriculum is provided with the opportunity to develop a special topics course(s) relative to the candidate’s interests. Applicants with no prior experience teaching are welcome to apply.

Your application should reflect your ability or potential to successfully:

  • Teach courses such as design history, communication design, graphic design, and typography.
  • Support and promote the program and school missions centered on excellence in teaching and learning through quality instruction, curriculum enhancement, and service.
  • Provide students with frequent, timely assessment of and clear feedback regarding academic performance.

With a 3/3 teaching load, faculty have additional responsibilities in advising with a minimal service load. Although this one-year teaching position is non-tenure eligible, there is an opportunity to apply to future tenure track positions within the Graphic Design Department.

The Department of Art, Design, and Visual Studies is situated in the School of the Arts designed to serve as the vibrant urban hub for the study, practice, and integration of the arts. The School cultivates new models of interdisciplinary innovation, entrepreneurial initiative, and collaborative community engagement in order to prepare artists, designers, and all students to thrive in a diverse world.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have:

  • A minimum of 3 years of established professional practice in Graphic Design, or a closely related field, as described in the resume or CV.
  • An MFA, MGD, MGXD, MDES, or equivalent terminal degree in communication design, visual communication, interaction design, or a related field of study (completed by August 2023) is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Visiting Assistant Professor of Practice candidates should have:

  • Teaching experience with a specialization in any of the following areas is preferred: user experience, user interface design, interactive media, hand and/or hybrid processes, design research and history, critical theory, sustainable design, or experimental pedagogy.
  • Professional and/or creative practice in Graphic Design or a closely related field, as described in the resume or CV, and as supported by a professional and/or creative portfolio.
  • A high-quality portfolio of professional, scholarly, and/or creative work.
