Job Summary/Basic Function:

Under the general direction of the University Architect and Executive Director, oversees the planning, design, and construction of capital projects and physical improvements undertaken by the University from an architectural perspective. Ensures that projects on campus meet applicable building codes, campus design standards, and industry standards of care. Licensed subject matter expert who consults on all architectural matters for the university. This role has no direct reports but has the authority to enforce applicable codes and standards across campus. Assists campus project managers and interior designer(s) in the Public Works process by providing expertise and reviewing project deliverables. Functions with a high degree of autonomy. May provide assistance and/or support for other employees. Proactively assesses risk to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational assets. Determines campus architectural strategies with campus-wide impact.

This position is not eligible for VISA sponsorship.

This position may have the opportunity to work hybrid where a mix of in-person work from a Boise State worksite and an alternative work location within the state of Idaho. Candidates must be able to work on-site as needed.

Department Overview:

Architectural & Engineering Services is responsible for project management from concept to completion. We work with campus departments to determine a project’s scope, cost and timing. We manage the bid, award and contract process while communicating with all parties involved to keep the project on track, within budget, within scope and on time.

Level Scope:

Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of area typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures. Typically hold a Bachelor’s or Advanced Degree and 5 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Essential Functions:

60% of the time the A&E Services, Campus Architect must:
● Under the direction of the University Architect, create, maintain, and update campus design standards.
● Attend project kick-off meetings with project managers to understand and provide input on project scopes.
● Review project design documents for compliance with campus design standards, to ensure that the design meets the original scope intent, and that the drawings follow the principles of good design.
● Attend punch list walks and Owner-Architect-Contractor (OAC) meetings (as invited by project managers) to confirm that the quality of construction matches the design intent of the project.
● Oversee and manage campus Project Affiliates Program. This program delegates the management of small projects to qualified maintenance personnel across campus.

35% of the time the A&E Services, Campus Architect must:
● Consult on design, accessibility, or code related questions from the campus community.
● Assist in developing cost estimates for initial project budgets or funding requests.
● Participate in campus committees for master planning, request prioritization, space utilization, project intake, and other needs as required.
● Review and provide recommendations for exterior materials and finishes
● Coordinate with campus interior designer on campus standard finishes and materials.
● Develop and maintain campus conformance drawings
● Provide training to A&E Services personnel on relevant architectural principles and practices.
● Provide layouts and potentially stamped drawings for small interior projects.

5% of the time the A&E Services, Campus Architect must:
● Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

● Experience in architectural design and construction practices.
● Knowledge of building codes, land use, and zoning laws.
● General experience in architectural construction administration and construction cost estimating.
● Skills in the preparation and review of construction documents.
● General knowledge of construction contracts and contract law.
● Knowledge of architectural professional practice procedures.
● Skills in appropriate human relations with expertise in communication; excellent customer service/team player.
● Ability to multi-task and adapt to other duties as assigned.
● Knowledge of building and material sciences.
● Skills in project management software such as Smartsheet, Bluebeam, AdobeSign, ProjectMates.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering or Construction Management or equivalent plus 5 years relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

● Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus 7 years experience.
● Registered Architect in the State of Idaho or ability to achieve registration within 6 months of hire.
● At least 1 year experience in DPW regulations and procedures.
● At least 2 years experience in innovative design and construction methods (Lean, IPD, etc.).

Salary and Benefits:
