95% of the Time the Position must:
Academic Advising
Provide academic advising to College of Engineering students including computer science, construction management and engineering majors, focusing on: ● Advising of departmental, college, and university policies and procedures ● Information on degree programs and creation of academic plans for meeting graduation requirements ● Monitoring of student progress through the Student Success Hub (SSH), including documentation of advising through up to date advising notes ● First-term required advising (RAD) sessions and registration advising for new incoming students as part of new student orientation for first year and transfer students ● Educating first-years about academic success practices ● Assisting student success coordinators in outreach, services, and programming for specific student populations, including first-year, undeclared, transfer, academic at-risk, and international students. ● Make appropriate referrals to additional academic and other campus support services (e.g., Peer Academic Coaching, LA sessions, career counseling, personal counseling, student involvement, and financial aid). ● Help students to navigate academic challenges by providing advising support for various appeals processes, including academic reinstatements, academic adjustments, and satisfactory academic progress (SAP) for financial aid as well as schedule changes. ● Provide a supportive advising environment that meets the unique needs of each student and promotes students engagement and autonomy; assist students to make well-informed decisions regarding their academic progress and general university experience. Be aware of the needs of different kinds of students (e.g., first generation students, non-resident students, veteran students, transfer students, students in groups not well-represented on campus ● Make appropriate referrals (e.g. career counseling, personal counseling, financial aid). ● Provide advising support for various appeals processes, including academic reinstatements, academic adjustments and/or satisfactory academic progress (SAP) for financial aid. ● Advise special populations of students including new or first-term transfer students, undeclared majors, international students, etc. assisting in exploration of academic programs, and focusing on academic progress, procedures, policies, and available academic resources. ● Utilize student-success tools and resources, including PeopleSoft, DegreeTracker, Student Success Dashboard, etc.).
5% of the Time the Position must:
University-Wide Advising Initiatives ● Participates in the creation of new-student orientation and presents academic information to students and parents during orientation programming. ● Coordinate communication to students regarding registration, academic difficulties, required advising, and financial aid appeals. ● Support retention efforts through activities such as outreach to students that haven’t enrolled in classes for the upcoming semester. ● Participate in college outreach, including meeting with prospective students
● Other duties as assigned.

- Direct knowledge of university student development and academic advising
- Demonstrated ability to help students make informed and responsible decisions, identify achievable goals, develop practical thinking and learning strategies, and promote life management skills to meet present and future needs
- Skill and comfort with public speaking (preferably teaching)
- Experience working with students from all walks of life
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex academic requirements and policies
- Experience working collaboratively as a part of a team to achieve program, departmental, and university goals
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, decision-making, and interpersonal skills
