Job Summary/Basic Function:

Provides faculty development support in the area of writing across the disciplines, consults on effective pedagogy, assessment, and/or course design, and assists with implementing strategies for student success.

This is an in-person position on the Boise State campus, although up to two remote work days per week are negotiable. The successful candidate must be, or be willing to move to, within commuting distance to Boise State. This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship.

Department Overview:

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is the nucleus of a university culture that values teaching and learning. We support, promote, and enhance evidence-based teaching practices to positively impact all student learning and success. CTL staff foster dialogue, scholarship, innovation, and excellence in learner-centered teaching, and promote teaching and scholarship that mutually enhance one another for the benefit of students, faculty, and the community. The CTL reports to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies in the Provost’s Office.

Level Scope:

Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees.

Essential Functions:
  • Collaborate in the design and implementation of programs that support faculty in effective teaching, with an emphasis on designing effective writing assignments (in general and informed by the growth of AI).
  • Support the CTL’s collaborations with the Department of Writing Studies, the Writing Center, First Year Writing, English Language Support Programs, and other campus programs with a vested interest in writing.
  • Consult with individual instructors to analyze needs and determine goals for support of their writing activities and assessments.
  • Design and facilitate workshops and other interventions that support faculty as teachers of writing across the disciplines.
  • Contribute to the delivery of recurring CTL programming and resources, making contributions based on the current scholarship of Composition & Writing Across the Curriculum.
  • Engage with current trends and technologies in the field of higher education through participation in conferences, professional organizations and/or professional development opportunities, as well as reviewing the literature.
  • Engage, together with CTL staff, in ongoing documentation, assessment, and improvement of the work of the unit.
  • Teach one class per academic year.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Experience with and knowledge of effective strategies for teaching college students to write, and teaching college students to use writing as a tool for learning.
  • Basic understanding of other pedagogical practices that support all student learning.
  • Ability to draw from current scholarship around effective teaching and faculty development in
  • Composition and/or Writing Across the Curriculum to inform work.
  • Ability to be both a collaborative team member and work independently.
  • Strong verbal, written and visual communication skills.
  • Effective facilitation and consultation skills.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s and 2 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Composition & Rhetoric or a related field, or advanced degree in another field with significant professional or academic experience in the area of college writing pedagogy.
  • Scholarly engagement in the area of Writing Across the Curriculum, writing in the disciplines, writing to learn, or a closely related area (e.g. conference presentations, published articles, presentations for professionals).
  • Familiarity with emerging best practices as they relate to responding to generative AI in writing instruction.
  • Ability to facilitate professional development in various formats for professional audiences, including facilitating in-person and virtual events.
  • Ability to build and manage constructive relationships with faculty, instructional staff, and other campus partners.
  • At least one year of experience working with faculty members and/or teaching in higher education.
Salary and Benefits:
 
The minimum starting salary for this position is $53,456.00 rising to $60,000 commensurate with experience. Boise State University provides a best-in-class benefits package, including (but not limited to):
