Research Assistant Boise, ID
The Quantitative Conservation Lab (www.quantitativeconservationlab.com) at Boise State University is seeking a field tech/research assistant to contribute to a variety of projects including evaluating effects of long-term habitat changes on prey demography and predator behavior at Morley Nelson Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, assessing trade-offs for small mammals in semi-arid systems, and impacts of habitat encroachment and reintroduced Aplomado Falcons in southern Texas, amongst others. The lab focuses on using rigorous quantitative approaches to answer ecological questions of conservation relevance. We rely on field techniques including safe live-trapping and radio-tracking of raptors and prey, but also on passive surveys using point counts, spotlight surveys, nest cameras, sound recorders, and scat and drone surveys. We are looking for a successful candidate to start in early 2022. The position is for one year, with benefits and salary negotiable depending on experience and qualifications. Funding is available for 2022 with the possibility of extending it based on fit and ongoing funding. A postdoctoral researcher position is available for a NASA-funded project focused on remote sensing of water resources in the western U.S. In particular, the post-doc will use optical and radar fusion, time-series datasets, and AI (e.g. deep learning, machine learning) to monitor water availability and the mesic resource restoration process. Of particular interest is mesic resource response to beaver rewilding efforts throughout the western U.S. Mesic resources, i.e. wetlands, riparian zones and wet meadows, are critical keystone resources for agricultural production, biodiversity, and ecosystem services in the West. The post-doc will develop new metrics from remotely sensed datasets to measure the outcomes of beaver rewilding in terms of ecosystem restoration and the ecosystem services that mesic resources provide. Our project team has rich geospatial datasets on beaver rewilding and we are looking for someone with advanced remote sensing, data science, and analytical skills better monitor water resources in general, and water resource response to land management interventions. We have three years of funding available for a research scientist/postdoctoral scientist focused on analyzing the efficacy and unintended consequences of policies intended to encourage sustainable land use practices. Such land use policies (such as protected areas, logging bans, sustainability certification, and restrictive zoning) are becoming more and more prevalent worldwide as societies struggle to satisfy competing demands for food, fiber, housing, biodiversity and ecosystem services. With “big data” and advanced statistical techniques, we have an increasing capacity to quantify the impacts of these policies. In this project, we focus on investigating land use policies aimed at protecting farmland from development across the continental US. States and counties across the U.S. have implemented a diverse range of policy mechanisms, providing a wide range of excellent opportunities to conduct sophisticated land use policy impact analysis research. Our project team has rich geospatial datasets on farmland conversion and policy implementation across the entire nation, in hand. We are looking for someone with advanced data science and analytical skills to use spatial econometric and causal identification strategies to quantify policy efficacy, identify leakage, and to investigate how social-ecological context influences policy outcomes.
